INFORMATION
Classroom temperature profoundly impacts the ‘Quality of Learning’
The educational outcomes and the attainment of full student potential have been impacted by classroom temperature since mainstream schools first opened their doors in Victorian times.
The Climate of Learning initiative identifies the significant learning, financial and environmental benefits of air conditioning and the funding, grants and support opportunities that are available.
There are 3 principle benefits that SLT and Trust managers should be aware of;
- Improving the Quality of Learning
- Significantly lowering energy costs
- Massively reducing CO2 output
Additionally, SLT members should make themselves aware of SAFEGUARDING and LEGAL obligations – particularly with regard to SEN and DA students.
Ambassadors and sporting celebrities are supporting Climate of Learning initiatives and events throughout 2025/26 and every UK mainland school qualifies for grants and IAFE support.
For typical price of 4 laptops, air conditioning is now almost without doubt the most profound positive legacy that any Leadership Team or Trust can leave for the generations of students that follow.
GRANTS
The Climate of Learning initiative has access to financial support and discounts from a variety of
sources.
Manufacturer’s Sponsorship
Global organisations who value the benefits of air conditioning to schools provide access to special education subsidies. These include “Midea” who are the largest global manufacturer and supplier of air conditioning. Midea will typically contribute 25% to an approved Climate of Learning project.
IAFE
The Institute of Air Conditioning For Education is a Learned Institute monitoring the quality and consistency of air conditioning installations and servicing in schools and colleges. The Institute currently covers all administrative and survey costs associated with approved projects.
SALIX
SALIX are an established government funded organisation supporting a varying portfolio of energy efficiency initiatives. SALIX grants can only be obtained for HEATING projects and they expressly forbid hardware to be used for cooling. This makes leasing a more attractive option for many schools.
Pied Piper Group
Pied Piper have been supporting schools for almost 3 decades. Friendly and experienced staff provide technical and administrative help and advice completely free of charge.
LEASING
The Climate of Learning initiative has negotiated preferential Leasing rates for UK mainland schools
These rate are available via Bluestone Leasing – a well established and respected education specialist.
To obtain a leasing quotation simply ask Pied Piper customer services who will arrange for a full written illustration to be sent over directly. Pied Piper will liaise with Bluestone to ensure they have all the correct details and costings.
Leasing rules for UK schools changed from 1 st April 2024 for local authority-maintained schools and 1 st September 2024 for Academy Trusts when they adopted the International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS). Schools are now able to access rates as low as 12% on terms up to 5 years.
Leasing includes ownership
Modern leasing allows schools to include a “balloon payment” within their quarterly payments rather than a separate financial fea at the end of the term. This means that the equipment fully belongs to the school at the end of the contract.
Return on investment (ROI)
When used for heating, a school will often see ROI within 3-4 years, achieved through significant energy savings. This makes Leasing a particularly attractive option in that quarterly savings on energy bills are often greater than the total bill prior to air conditioning being installed.
Airconditioning generates income
When a lease concludes it is very unusual that the HEATING cost savings have not fully paid for the full system and installation. From this day a school is essentially GENERATING INCOME. (Energy cost savings vs staying with their previous fossil fuel system)
INSTALLATION
All installation engineers are FGAS accredited and fully DBS screened.
All installation engineers are FGAS accredited and fully DBS screened.
The Installation Team Leader will have at least 10 years’ experience. They will liaise directly with a site contact on the first day to create an efficient schedule of works and minimise any disruption to the school.
Installation hardware will typically be delivered to site 2-3 days in advance of the planned
installation works.
All Midea air conditioning systems include wireless options and cloud control software as standard.
Where height access or specialist equipment is required, Pied Piper have national agreements with HSS and Speedy Hire and will procure appropriate equipment “at cost” on the school’s behalf.
MiPro accredited engineers are used for all Midea installations to validate their exclusive 10 year education warranty.
TM44
TM44 is a legally required commercial site inspection which includes schools.
It is an energy performance certification for commercial air conditioning (AC) systems with an effective rated output over 12kW, carried out every five years by an accredited assessor.
The purpose of the TM44 certification is to improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon footprint, and lower running costs by identifying faults, assessing control settings, and providing recommendations for system improvements and maintenance.
The inspection is part of the UK’s compliance with the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) and results in an official Air Conditioning Inspection report.
We recommend that TM44 inspections be carried out every 5 years in conjunction with an annual service to minimise cost.
